Julia Quickfall PhD study – Title: The cross-cultural promotion of health: a partnership process?
Principles and factors involved in the culturally competent community based nursing care of asylum applicants in Scotland.
Have you ever thought about how community nursing care is influenced by culture and ethnicity? The aim of this ethnographic study was to investigate the principles and factors underlying the culturally competent nursing care of asylum applicants. Three major themes emerged from the study findings:
• The provision of equitable, accessible and non-discriminatory services?• The cross-cultural promotion of health?• The delivery of socially inclusive services
This study contributes to community nursing knowledge in explaining, through synthesis of the literature and study data, a model of cultural competence for the care of asylum applicants. It also provides a set of best practice statements, which require further investigation.
If you would like to receive an electronic version of the thesis, please contact Julia Quickfall.
Julia can provide a presentation about her research and will be presenting at the CPHVA conference in Harrogate this autumn
Modernising Nursing in the Community Programme Board
The QNIS Nurse Director, Julia Quickfall is a member of the new Modernising Community Nursing Board.  This group is now meeting monthly to discuss how community nursing moves forward to meet service delivery challenges in the 21st centruy.  If you have any issues you wish raised at this forum, please contact the QNIS office.
The Modernising Board produces an update after each board meeting, which summarises the current progress and key actions.
Progress and Key Actions from Board meeting on 13 May 2010:
A presentation was given on the eHealth Strategy for NHS Scotland. A small group will consider and recommend how the Board can best provide strategic leadership to facilitate and support eHealth developments for nursing in the community.
The 3 work stream sub-groups - Early Years, Keeping People at Home and Keeping People Healthy at Work and Play - have all met for the 2nd time. Work plans are being finalised for agreement by the Board and will be shared more widely when they are approved.
An update was given on the Review of Nursing in the Community evaluation study contract.  A decision has been made on the successful contractor and an announcement will be made as soon as the contract award is complete. Some slippage in the award process means that the report will not now be available until early 2011. The evaluation outputs will be considered by the Board at that time to see how it can inform the Programme.
The Communication Plan and the Framework for Patient and Public Involvement have both been signed-off.
A further draft of the contextual paper on the policy landscape across Scotland and beyond was considered.  Work will continue to complete this for the next Board meeting. The document will then become an ongoing web-based resource and updated twice yearly.
The Scottish Government has appointed Jane Harris, University of Dundee, as the Modernising Nursing in the Community Project Lead. Jane will take up post on 12 July.
A presentation by the Joint Improvement Team for Community Care Outcomes will be made at the next Board meeting.
Date of next Board meeting – 14 August 2010
QNIS Conference (11 March 2010)
