Scottish Conservative Party Manifesto – Health and Care Priorities

13th April 2016

Today, the Scottish Conservative Party released their manifesto for the 2016 Scottish Parliament Elections.  Some of their key priorities for health and care are listed below.  We will provide details on the Manifestos of all mainstream Political Parties as they are issued.

  • Protecting NHS funding with a health guarantee to ensure the best annual budget increases
  • Boosting mental health investment
  • Putting patients in charge – allowing them to make informed choices about their health
  • Gradually reintroducing prescription charges for those who can afford them, with expanded exemption lists
  • Using those funds to invest in nurses, GPs, health visitors and access to new medicines
  • Reviewing current healthcare targets, prioritising those that improve outcomes over those which micro manage clinician time
  • Putting pharmacies at the heart of primary care by expanding the Minor Ailment Service
  • Increasing budgets for GP clusters to enhance primary care
  • Commit to universal GP-attached Health Visitors – hiring 500 more HVs over and above the commitment by the SNP
  • Exploring the potential for a levy on multiple missed appointments
  • Moving towards parity between physical health issues and mental health issues
  • Introducing significant investment in mental health treatment, including support provision in every GP surgery
  • Supporting to social prescribing and particularly information available at GPs
  • Increasing support for dementia sufferers under 65
  • Exploring potential merit in devolving disability benefits to allow the creation of tailored care packages
  • Increasing support for unpaid carers
  • Expanding integration to include housing associations and with better data sharing
  • Improving end of life care with better partnerships between the ambulance service, health service and third sector
  • Extending outdoor activities for children to improve healthy living
