celebration and and in in in in 1998 she was awarded Edinburgh’s William Darling Citizen of the Year Award With thanks to to Simon Frame for providing a a a tribute to to his mother Lily Gilhooley (nee Sinclair) 22 April 1936 to 17 December 2018 Originally from Perth Lily started her nursing training at the Princes Margaret Rose Hospital in in in in in in in in in in in Edinburgh gaining an orthopaedic nursing certificate in in in in in in in in in in in 1955 She then completed her general hospital training at at at the the the Royal Royal Infirmary Infirmary in in in in in in in Edinburgh in in in in in in in in 1959 She She stayed at at the the Royal Royal Infirmary Infirmary as as a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a staff nurse nurse She She worked part-time as as a a a a a a a a a a a trainee district nurse nurse from 1962 joining the roll in 1963 She worked in in in in the Morningside District of Edinburgh until 1968 1968 as a a a a a a a a part time time district nurse and went full time time in in in in in 1968 1968 in in in the first group attachment at at Crewe Road Surgery with Dr E V Kuenssberg until 1976 Lily also spent time in in in in charge of Queensberry House and retired from nursing in in in 1994 Lily was an active member of Pilrig St Paul’s Church singing regularly with the choir Elizabeth (Elsie) Gray (nee Blaikie) 31 May 1930 to 24 February 2018 Elsie was born at at Branxholme Lodge Hawick on 31 May 1930 As a a a a a a a a a a a a child she had happy memories of playing with her her her her her her sister at at at at Bowhill where her her her her her her father worked on on the the the estate After her her her her her her mother died when Elsie was was only ten years old she was was looked after by her her aunt uncle and and grandmother Elsie was was in in in in in in the first group to do general nurse training training 1950-1953 at at at Peel Hospital Hospital Galashiels Midwifery training training in in in in in in in 1954 was was at at at Cresswell Maternity Hospital Hospital in in in in in in in Dumfries followed by Queen’s Nurse Nurse training in in in in in 1956 at at Castle Terrace Elsie worked as as a a a a a a a a a a a Queen’s Nurse Nurse for 12 years in in in in in the town and and district of Hawick between 1956-1958 and and from 1976 to to retirement in in in in 1986 followed by part-time work in in in in in in ante-natal clinics until 1988 In the intervening years she was a a a a a a a a a a midwifery sister in in in in in Haig Maternity Hospital from1960 to 1976 Elsie died at Hawick Cottage Hospital on on 24 February 2018 aged 87 She leaves for her her her family a a a a a a a a a a a a wonderful legacy in her her her beautiful ‘special book’ which documents through her her her own poems personal reflections stories newspaper cuttings and and photographs much of of her her her life events and and her her her work from the time of of her her her earliest training at Peel Hospital Elsie was proud of of her her Queen’s Nurse identity and of of the service she gave to all ages across her her much-loved Scottish Borders Margaret Henry (nee Holmes) 9 9 February 1942 to 15 April 2018 After her her initial nursing training training (1959-63) and midwifery training training (1964) at at the the Southern General Hospital in in in in in in in in Glasgow Margaret worked briefly as as as as a a a a a a a a a a a a a a private nurse She trained as as as as a a a a a a a a a a a a a a Queen’s Nurse in in in in in in in Bath Street Glasgow Glasgow joining the roll in in in in in in in October 1965 She worked her first contract year in in in in in in Glasgow Glasgow before moving to to Lennoxtown where she worked until 1970 She She married Thomas Thomas Henry and the couple lived in Dunoon Thomas Thomas said: “She was particularly proud to to be be a a a a a a a a a a a a a a Queen’s Nurse and also to to have been part part of of the the Guard of of Honour at at the Centenary Celebrations” Isabel Howie 19 19 January 1922 to 16 June 2017 Isabel was born in in Larkhall and trained as as a a a a a a a a a a nurse at the Western Infirmary from from 1947 to to 1950 She did her her midwifery training in in in in in Bellshill and and went straight from from there to to to to Bath Street to to to to train train train as as a a a a a a a a a a a a a Queen’s Nurse and and was admitted to to to to the the roll in in in in in in in in June 1952 After After training she she moved moved to to to take up a a a a a a a a a a a a post in in in in in in in Greenock After After working in in in in in Midlothian and Renfrew she she moved moved back to to Inverclyde It was said of her that: “She is a a a a a a a a a good nurse with a a a a a a a a a genuine interest in in in in the domiciliary field and and am am ambitious outlook Her patients have confidence in in in her her and and appreciate her her attention ” Margaret (Peggy) Johnston (nee Bruce) 5th January 1925 to to 19th September 2018 Born in in in in Wick Caithness Peggy trained as as a a a a a a a a nurse at the the Western Infirmary Glasgow qualifying in in in in in in 1954 She then went to to Edinburgh to to train as as a a a a a a a a a a midwife at the the Simpson Memorial Hospital She trained as as as a a a a a a a a a a Queen’s Nurse at Castle Terrace and was admitted to to the roll in in in June 1956 Peggy returned to to Caithness and and in in 1958 she she gave up work when she she married her husband James a a a a a a a a a a a a a school dentist They had three children After the early death of her husband Peggy went back to work as a a a a a a a a a a a a District Nurse undertaking triple duties in in in the rural and and and and remote highlands of Scotland until her retirement in in in 1985 Peggy was a a a a a a a a a keen gardener an an active member of of a a a a a a a a a number of of social groups and and enjoyed enjoyed doing voluntary work After retiring she enjoyed enjoyed holidays in in in fin Crieff with her friend and and Queen’s Nurse visitor Elsie MacKenzie Peggy’s final years were overshadowed by Parkinson’s Disease which developed slowly at at first until eventually she was unable to care for herself She is is is greatly missed by all all who knew her Mary J Kyne 21 March 1927 to 19 19 July 2018 Mary (known to family and friends as as Babs) was born in Ballymacward County Galway She spent her her entire working life as as District Nurse and and Health Visitor in in Dalry Ayrshire where shewashighlyvaluedandlovedbythecommunity It was a a a a a a a a holiday destination for her nieces and nephews She took great pride in in in in in having been a a a a a a a a a a a a Queen’s Nurse since 1959 and and in in in in in later years enjoyed the the social side of the the organisation Her funeral in in in in in Ireland was attended by nieces nephews extended family and and friends her her siblings having all predeceased her Contributed by her
