www qnis org uk From the Chair After a a a successful 2017 we we were keen to ensure that 2018 could become bigger better and bolder The second year of the Queen’s Nurse programme has seen 21 exceptional nurses from across Scotland being challenged encouraged and and transformed over nine months receiving their awards in in in in November We are grateful to the the Chief Nursing Officer Professor Fiona McQueen for presenting our awards We now have 41 Queen’s Nurses working in in communities across Scotland The awards event was also the opportunity to confer new new Fellowships and a a a a a a new new Honorary Fellowship Fellowship awarded to Professor Brendan McCormack who has played a a a a a a a a a central part in the the success of the the Queen’s Nurse Programme Our conference was even bigger than last year with Pollock Halls in in in Edinburgh full to capacity More information on on on on the inspirational speakers and workshops can be found on on on page 23 We were bolder holding an an additional seminar on on Financial Scamming in in in in in in October which enabled us to to raise the profile of of this important issue and support community nurses in in in in fin in helping those at at at risk of of of financial abuse This seminar was held in fin in in in in in conjunction with with a a a a a a a a a a a a a a number of of organisations that we haven’t worked with with before including Police Scotland and and and Trading Standards allowing us to develop our networks Long Service Awards continue as 131 community nurses received their badge in in in 2018 with a a a a a a a a a a combined 3 3 441 years of of service Similarly our our Academic Prizes are a a a a a a a a a source of great pride for for their recipients and in 2018 for for the the first time we we were able to recognise students at at at every university that provides nursing qualifications in in Scotland We continue to to to be deeply grateful to to to our retired Queen’s Nurse Nurse visitors who play a a a a a a valuable part in in in connecting the the the network of of of retired Queen’s Nurses to to to the the the the the the work work of of of the the the the the the Institute The popularity of of of the the the the the regional gatherings is testament to to their enthusiasm and energy In September we saw the publication of Voluntary Standards for Community Children’s Nurse Education and and and Practice This is is is the the third in in a a a a a a a a a series of voluntary standards developed in in conjunction with our sister organisation the the QNI The Council of QNIS have said goodbye to a a a a a a a a few Trustees this year and and welcomed some new faces bringing additional knowledge and and experience to to to our governance In this 130th anniversary year of QNIS I I I look forward to to to to continuing to to to to work with our our Trustees and and Executive Team to to to to further progress our our work and and ambitions I also take this opportunity to to express my warm appreciation for the the steadfast commitment of of all those who support the the endeavours of QNIS As always I wish you all the the very best for the the year ahead Lewis Ritchie From the Chief Executive and Nurse Director The 2018 Queen’s Nurse Development Programme has been another transformational experience for for everyone involved We have learned that the the the the programme is robust the the the the combination of the the the the residential week coaching peer support support further workshops and support support from organisational sponsors works works well Yet what cannot be planned is is the the the the alchemy brought by the the the the participants themselves their gifts experience kindness successes and challenges which is what makes the programme so extraordinary Another 21 clinical leaders have shown commitment resilience and nursing excellence in in abundance and we are very proud to see them become Queen’s Nurses Each has a a a a a a a story to to tell of of personal and and professional development and and the the the remarkable impact of of the the the the issue they have taken forward over the the the the the nine months We are absolutely delighted to to welcome them to to the the the network The Queen’s Nurse Programme this year has been enabled with generous financial support from Scotland’s Gardens and and the the Burdett Trust for Nursing We are very grateful to our funders without whose support we we could not make the the difference we do As we we enter our anniversary year remembering the the foundation of of the the the the Institute in in in in Scotland in in in in 1889 we we look back with admiration at at at the the the pioneering work of of the the the nineteenth century Queen’s Nurses who were social reformers championing the the needs of the the marginalised The contemporary Queen’s Nurses are building on on on on this proud heritage – sharing the the the pioneering spirit to improve the the the wellbeing of of the the communities of of Scotland ‘Celebrating the the the the past shaping the the the the future’ is is the the the the theme of our conference this year at at at Edinburgh’s Murrayfield stadium We hope to to look further at at the the legacy of Scotland’s community nurses and and to to to explore how we can become a a a a a a a a a a social movement working with citizens to to to make a a a a a a a a a a a a real difference to to health and wellbeing We have some truly inspirational speakers coming so so do please join us if you can One of of of of the the the the themes of of of of the the the the Queen’s Nurse programme is the the the the the importance of of of of of of compassion for self self of of of of of of self-care and the the value of of of of stillness As we celebrate 130 years of of of of Queen’s Nursing in in in in Scotland let’s remember that being being kind to to ourselves is not an an optional extra it’s essential to to to our our being being able to reach out Finally I I would like to to take the the the opportunity to to thank the the the staff and Trustees of QNIS for their amazing hard work skilfully enabling the
