www qnis org uk What it means to be a a a Trustee Valuable insight Into the role of our Trustees Jane Walker Jane Walker retired in in in in 2010 after a a a a a a a a varied career in in in in nursing with roles in in in in in the the the NHS and the the the Scottish Government She has been Honorary Secretary of the the the QNIS Council since 2011 Here she shares an insight into what her role at at QNIS involves I spent more than 30 years working working in in in in in community nursing working in in several health board areas across Scotland in Primary Care and and Community Services Latterly I worked for the Scottish Government where I was responsible for leading several national projects and providing advice to civil servants and MSPs My role at QNIS brings me a a a a a a lot of joy as I I love having the opportunity to to continue to to support community nursing and promote the work of QNIS by being a a Trustee Being involved with QNIS is a a a a a a a a really good way of keeping in in in in in in in in touch with with with what’s happening within community nursing and staying connected to to all all the “I love having the opportunity to to continue to to support community nursing and promote the work of QNIS ” issues affecting primary care in in in Scotland With the the the experience I I bring to to to the the the table I I hope to to to contribute to to to these developments I I feel it it is important to learn from the the the past and I I love my contact with with the the the the retired Queen’s Nurses They are the the the the trailblazers within community nursing and and there is so much to to learn from the the the the the the stories of of their their professional lives and and the the the the the the things they experienced throughout their their careers The fellowship of of the the the retired Queen’s Nurses is so important to the the the the work of of QNIS and and I I chair the the the the Welfare Committee which meets twice a a a a a a a year and and brings together all our Queen’s Nurse Visitors I also chair the History Advisory Group which is is is a a a a a a a a really fascinating thing to to to to to be involved with – it’s always uncovering new questions as as we try to to to to piece together the the history of Queen’s Nursing in in Scotland David Williams We speak to one of our three new Trustees David Williams who reflects on on on his first six months as a a a a a QNIS Council member My primary professional interest is is is governance and leadership So the fact that that that QNIS is is is is an an an an organisation that that that is is is is ever-evolving was something that that that appealed to to me me me when considering applying to to to become a a a a a a a a a a a a Trustee It is is an an exciting time to to to be be a a a a a a a a a a a a part of of QNIS as the organisation explores new avenues and and constantly works to to to find ways of of supporting Scotland’s community nurses to to be be be the the best they can be be be Because of my arts and and culture background I am also very very interested in in in “everyday creativity” and and how it it can change lives In this respect I I am am fascinated by the Queen’s Nurse Programme and Catalysts for Change initiative looking at at at at at how to to to unlock the the the creativity of community nurses to to to help them make changes to to to improve the the the the health and wellbeing of of those they care for Also like many people my age (!) I’m looking to give something back in in in in the way of volunteering and this for me me is is is an an opportunity to to do that that as as well as as keep my my personal development going in in a a a a a a a a a sector that that is is way out of of my my comfort zone of the arts I I seriously hope I I can bring expertise and objectivity to the the the board room in in in in the the the the service of the the the the charity Having said that I I I I hope I can support the the the the organisation in in in in practical ways and even have some fun in the the process In the the short time I I I I have have been a a a a a a Trustee of QNIS I I I I have have particularly enjoyed the the the opportunities to to meet a a a a a a a wide range of people connected to the the Institute I have attended the the council and staff development day which brings together Trustees from different backgrounds including health and and social care law and and accountancy as as well as education Having lots of different voices around the the table can only be a a a a a a a a a good thing I have also visited the the “I’m looking to give something back in in the way of volunteering and this for me is an opportunity to do that ” office at at at Castle Terrace to facilitate a a a a a a a a a a a a a session with the the team discussing their forward planning and I have attended a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a conference celebrating the the the work of the the the Catalysts projects It’s given me just a a a a a a taste of of of the the long reach of of of the the work of of of QNIS and I’m I’m looking forward to more great experiences now I’m I’m on board QNIS Newsletter & Review of 2018 4
